About the Artist

“It is my desire to continue to visibly show the richness of my ancestry to the world.” 

An Afro-Puerto Rican artist born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Tenjin Ikeda learned from his mother at a very young age the importance of cultural and spiritual tradition and heritage. At around 8 years old, Ikeda taught himself to draw and became hooked. He has been making art seriously now for more than 30 years, using the various mediums of painting, sculpture, and printmaking. Ikeda attended the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he studied graphic design and fine arts. It was at The Art Students League that he discovered printmaking, which has been his focus for the past 25 years.  

Ikeda’s work has been acquired by The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The Print Club of Albany, and the Art Student’s League and is held in private collections in the US, Canada, Mexico, and the Bahamas. It has been featured as cover art and illustrations for various books. He was included in Modern Printmaking by Sylvie Covey (Watson-Guptill, 2016), a book of 30 contemporary printmakers, and Botanical Block Printing by Rosanna Morris (Pavilion Books, 2025).

Ikeda also worked for 6 years as an artist assistant to Richard Artschwager, and with artist Keith Haring on a mural project at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn. He has participated in group shows throughout the United States, Ireland, Japan, Spain, Australia, Puerto Rico, and Estonia.
